A Deadwood Experience You’ll Never Forget

Right up until 1980, illegal sex work was active in Deadwood and largely ignored by local law enforcement.  See how the world’s oldest profession impacted the community and uncover the unbelievable story of what brought it to an unexpected end.  

Visitors to The Brothel Deadwood will be transported through the 104-year story with a 45-minute guided tour of the rooms at 610 Main Street, the original site of the Shasta Rooms brothel. The rooms are curated with a variety of period appropriate furnishings.

The Rooms You'll Visit

Your journey begins in the parlor, where you'll be transported to the late 1800s,  setting the stage for the stories that lie ahead. As you move through the brothel, you'll visit a series of four working rooms, each representing a different era: 1876-1900, 1920s, 1940s-1950s, and 1960s-1970s. Experience what life was like for the women who entered the world of prostitution during these times. The tour also includes a glimpse into the everyday life of a sex worker through a recreated normal bedroom, as well as an opportunity to step into the shoes of the madam as you visit her office and bedroom. In the viewing room, you'll see interviews with local officials and residents who had dealings with the brothel, the madams, and the working girls.

The tour delves into the lives of individuals who shaped the history of Deadwood's brothels. Hear stories about the sex workers themselves, the madams, the clients, and other fascinating personalities from Deadwood's early years, including the notorious Al Swearingen.
